Pesticide Applicator/Dispenser Certification

Students will learn about pesticides and their use and about federal, provincial and municipal laws governing personnel and environmental issues. Successful completion of the course depends upon students obtaining a 5-year pesticide applicator/dispenser certificate.

Botany for Horticulture

In the lecture, students study the morphology, anatomy, physiology and reproduction of cone-bearing and flowering plants (gymnosperms and angiosperms). Plant taxonomy and nomenclature introduce students to the major plant families utilized in horticulture. Concepts in evolution and plant ecology are discussed to challenge some current horticultural practices. In the laboratory students work with fresh and preserved plant material, and demonstrate different aspects of plant physiology to provide an understanding of current horticultural practices.

Soils, Soil Amendments and Soilless Media: An Introduction

Students study soils and soilless media, taking into consideration soil formation, physical and chemical properties of soil, fertilizer use and behaviour, soil amendments and test result analysis.

Introduction to Horticulture Equipment and Maintenance

Students will explore the machinery and mechanical systems used in horticulture. They will learn the principles and terminology of electrical, hydraulic, braking, steering, power and lubrication systems. Students will also learn safe work practices and discuss the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and equipment maintenance records.

Equipment for Production Horticulture: An Introduction

In this introduction to the maintenance of production horticulture equipment and equipment systems, students will practise basic trouble shooting procedures on equipment such as small tractors, Bobcats, rototillers, soil mixers, power washers, seeders, electrical conductivity and pH meters, backpack sprayers and flat fillers.

In this applied course, the students will practise basic landscape installation and maintenance including concrete and stone structures, pathways and plant material. Students will also practise basic landscaping equipment operation.

Students work on the University College grounds and golf course to gain practical experience in basic turf maintenance.

Introduction to Plant Identification

In this introductory course, students will practise skills which will enable them to identify a wide range of plants used in all segments of horticulture. Students study examples of trees, shrubs, vines, ground covers, perennials, annuals, house plants and cut flowers. Important plant characteristics discussed include leaves, flowers, fruits, plant shapes and branching patterns. Students also learn about growing requirements and plant use and availability.

Introduction to Greenhouse Work I

During this course, students work in the University College-operated greenhouses to gain experience in basic horticulture labour and equipment operations. Students grow and maintain fall season crops, possibly including poinsettias, chrysanthemums, cut flowers, potted plants, greenhouse vegetables and forestry crops.

Introduction to Pest Management

Students will learn about pests (including insects and mites) and how to prevent and manage them through effective crop maintenance and a combination of chemical and biological control methods. Students will also learn about diseases and disorders in plants (including bacteria, viruses, algae, water moulds and fungi) and how to use backpack sprayers.

Landscape Drafting

Students will study basic drafting techniques and standards. They will also practise drafting skills through a series of exercises. Topics that will be included in this course are the proper use of drafting tools and the application of proper drafting techniques.

Basic Landscape Operations

Students will practise the basic skills and techniques for surveying, installing and maintaining landscapes. They will study print reading and drafting and will learn about the basic principles of landscape design for residential properties.

Plant Identification II

Students will enhance their plant identification skills learned in HORT 1145. The course is based entirely on the field identification of trees, shrubs, ground covers, vines and other plants. Students will discuss each plant with respect to shape, branching patterns, flower, leaf and fruit characteristics, growing requirements and use in the landscape.

Turf Management I

Students will gain an understanding of turf grass management, taking into consideration topics such as turf grass identification, primary and secondary turf grass cultural operations, turf establishment and renovation practices and the development of cultural programs.

Arboriculture I

Students will gain practical hands-on experience, as weather permits, in the pruning of trees and shrubs. They will explore basic Arboriculture practices such as planting, site preparation, planting and staking, and the use of pruning tools.

Plant ID: Protected Cultivation

Students will practice the identification of plant species produced in commercial greenhouses, as well as plants commonly used in interior plantscapes. Students will also learn about the use of plants, their growing seasons and market value.

Plant Propagation I

Students will learn the main topics of plant propagation. Seed propagation including seed storage, seed quality, seed dormancy and environmental factors affecting seed germination will be described and demonstrated. Micropropagation and traditional vegetative propagation (cuttings, grafting and specialized stems and roots) will also be described and demonstrated. The principles and practices of plant breeding will be discussed, including Plant Breeders' Rights.

Introduction to Greenhouse Work II

During this course, students work in the University College-operated greenhouses to gain experience in basic horticulture labour and equipment operations. Students grow and maintain winter and spring season crops, possibly including Easter lilies, bedding plants, cut flowers, potted plants, greenhouse vegetables and forestry crops.

Horticultural Work Experience

This course consists of approved and counselled work experience in the horticultural industry for a minimum of 14 weeks or 490 hours (normally completed during the summer between first and second year). A report may be required.

Grounds Machinery

This course is an in-depth study of horticultural and turfgrass equipment used for cultivation, seeding, spraying, moving, aerating, top dressing, turf renovation and other grounds maintenance activities. Machinery selection and purchase, maintenance, operation and design of equipment (electronics, hydraulics, hydrostatics, tear down, chain an blade sharpening, and troubleshooting small gasoline and diesel engines) are also dealt with.

Landscape and Turf Pests

Students will undertake a detailed study of specific pest problems common to ornamental and native trees, shrubs, ground covers and turf grasses. They will explore pest life cycles, plant symptoms, pest prevention and pest control. Students will also gain an understanding of integrated pest and disease management using a variety of methods including Internet resources and diagnostic CD-ROM's.

Weeds and Weed Control

Students will learn about the impact weeds have in ornamental plants and turf. Students identify weeds, learn about their biology, study weed characteristics and control strategies, and discuss integrated pest management and the use of herbicides.

Landscape Design I

This course is an introduction to the history and basic principles of landscape design for single family residential properties including plant selection and placement, creative problem solving, and client and landscape maintenance criteria. Students will be involved in projects for actual clients and practise the preparation of working drawings such as concept and planting plans.

Plant ID III

This course is based on field studies and slide presentations to further students' identification of annuals, biennials, perennials, bulbs, ornamental grasses and ferns. Also discussed are food plants such as fruit-bearing bushes and trees. Each plant is discussed with respect to form, texture, habit, foliage, flower and fruit characteristics, cultural requirements, and use in gardens and specialty landscapes.

Turf Management II

Students will build on the skills acquired in HORT 1230 and continue to explore the principles of turf grass growth and development and the impact of the atmospheric, edaphic and biotic environments on the turf grass community. Students will also learn about the latest development in turf grass breeding and research.

Irrigation and Drainage

Students will study the soil-water-plant relationship as it applies to landscape irrigation and drainage. Topics will include irrigation and drainage design, installation and maintenance.

Turfgrass Pest Management

This course consists of a detailed study of the pest problems common to turf grasses. A portion of the course will deal with the common pest problems of native and ornamental trees, shrubs and ground covers. Students will examine and discuss pest life cycles, plant symptoms, pest prevention and control, and pesticide storage and use. Students will also learn about the importance of integrated pest and disease management.

Propagation of Woody and Herbaceous Ornamental Plants

Students use the principles of plant propagation techniques learned in HORT 1261 and apply them to perennials, trees and shrubs commonly grown in the nursery industry. The collection, extraction and successful germination of seed will be described and demonstrated. Students practise vegetative plant propagation techniques such as grafting, budding, layering and micropropagation and multiplying plants through cuttings. Students also learn about the proper environment needed to achieve successful and efficient results.

Floriculture I

Students will become familiar with commercial production practices of seasonal potted and cut flower crops grown in Canadian greenhouses. They will learn about the propagation, cultural and environmental requirements for each crop and will apply these skills daily in the University College greenhouses.

Greenhouse Vegetable Production

Students will gain a thorough understanding of the culture and management practices of greenhouse vegetable crops. They will study propagation methods, temperature, light and fertilizer requirements, crop scheduling, integrated pest management and cultivated varieties. Students will gain hands-on experience through growing tomato, long English cucumber, sweet pepper and lettuce crops in the University College greenhouses.

Greenhouse Pests

This course consists of a detailed study of major greenhouse pests. Topics include insects and their life cycles and feeding habits, fungus and bacterial diseases as well as viruses. Proper identification of pest problems will be practiced during lab classes. Students will practise methods of control including fogging, spraying, misting and drenching. The importance of integrated pest management will be stressed.

Production Facilities and Equipment

This course covers features and selection of structures, coverings, and benches for commercial greenhouses and nurseries. Specialized systems and equipment will also be covered. Labs will involve greenhouse and nursery monitoring and maintenance, and equipment demonstration.

Students report on the experiences gained during their summer work experience (HORT 1113 and 2300) in the form of a formal class presentation.

Landscape Estimating and Contract Administration

Students will learn the preparation of business plans, cost accounting and the administration of contracts. They will also be introduced to a variety of contracts, business forms and specifications, and will estimate a landscape project and be involved in tender opening including the comparison of results.

Prerequisites: HORT 2300 or equivalent work experience.

Landscape Design II

Students will learn about the challenges associated with commercial and industrial landscape design. Topics will include design skills such as cut and fill calculations, site and client analysis, and plant composition. They will carry out design projects which include the preparation of working drawings such as grading plans, elevation drawings and construction details.

Landscape Construction

Students will explore both the theory and practice of landscape construction. They will have an opportunity to practise the construction and installation of landscape features such as patios, retaining walls, ponds/pools and low voltage landscape lighting.

Wood Construction

Students will explore both the theory and practice of light wood construction. They will have the opportunity to work on projects such as fences, decks, arbors, lattices, etc. A basic set of hand tools may be required.

Introduction to Computer in Landscape Design

In this introduction to computer-aided drafting, students will carry out the design of landscape projects. Using selected software, they will plan, create and print landscape drawings.

Plant Identification IV

Students will enhance their plant identification skills learned in HORT 1145. The course is based entirely on the field identification of trees, shrubs, ground covers, vines and other plants. Students will study unusual plants and cultivated varieties with landscape potential.

Turfgrass Irrigation Design

This is an advanced irrigation design course specifically related to golf course and athletic field irrigation. Topics include sprinkler performance, irrigating greens, tees and fairways, valves, controllers, pipe layout, sizing and pumps.

Prerequisites: HORT 1230 or (HRTA 1230 and 1231 and 1232) and HORT 2331 or (HRTA 1331 and 1332)

Sports Turf and Alternate Surfaces

In this advanced course, students will further develop management techniques for specialized turf areas and alternate surfaces such as football fields, baseball diamonds, bowling greens, grass tennis courts and polo fields. Emphasis will be placed on design, construction and maintenance.

Golf Course Management

Students will study golf course management practices, including the design, construction and maintenance of all areas that make up a golf course. They will learn management practices in the context of the history of golf, golf rules, the play of the game, environmental stewardship and golf course ownership structures.

Arboriculture II

In this course, students will carry out a detailed examination of tree biology and gain practical experience in pruning and damage repair such as cavity work. Other topics include the diagnosis of plant problems such as non-infectious disorders and the development of maintenance schedules.

Nursery Production of Trees and Shrubs in the Field

The students will be introduced to container nursery production in British Columbia, and will learn about container sizes, growing media preparation, fertilizer application, and the planting, spacing, pruning and irrigation of plants. They will also learn about inventory control and plant size standards for container grown plants. Students will discuss environmental consideration with respect to plant irrigation and water run-off management.

This course will introduce the student to container nursery production in British Columbia. Forestry Crop Production

This course is an introduction to the culture and management of forestry crops which are grown in western Canada. Propagation methods, temperature and light requirements, fertilization, and integrated pest management will be discussed for each crop mentioned. Production techniques include seedlings, stecklings and tissue culture.

Greenhouse Environment

The design and control of greenhouse environments, including temperature, light, humidity, air circulation and gases. Daily responsibilities in Kwantlen's greenhouses.

Bedding Plant Production

This course covers the principles and techniques of commercial bedding plant production as well as the production requirements of common species.

Ergonomics and Safety

Students will examine work station design and work procedures to maximize productivity and maintain employee health and motivation. In addition, students will become familiar with operational and structural safety issues.

Prerequisites: HORT 2300 or equivalent work experience.

HORT 2477 cr-3
Production Horticulture Management

Students will explore the financial aspects of growing different crops and using different labour or propagation procedures. They will discuss the importance of well timed crop rotation and the costs involved with each crop. Topics also include personnel requirements, wholesale and retail marketing and guidelines for decision-making.

Floriculture: Spring Production

Students will study the commercial production of seasonal floriculture crops grown in Canadian greenhouses, including bedding plants, spring potted plants, and cut flowers. Propagation, culture, environmental requirements, and marketing will be covered for each crop. Weekly responsibilities in the university college greenhouses are an integral component of the course.
