Beth Stewart

Dr. Beth Stewart (she/her) received her PhD in 2018 from the Institute for Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice at the University of British Columbia (UBC) where she was also a Liu Scholar at the Liu Institute for Global Issues. She received her MA and BA in History from UBC and Carleton University, respectively, and also holds professional certification in New Media Studies (Vancouver Film School) and TESOL.

Beth's PhD research involved a five-year study in northern Uganda with children born of forced marriage inside the rebel group, the Lord's Resistance Army. As a freelance editor, she works on humanitarian reports and history and political science manuscripts. Drawing on such interdisciplinary expertise, Beth's teaching engages diverse perspectives and ideas on subjects that include war, children/youth, imperialism/colonialism, post-colonialism, nation-building, political resistance, social justice, and the politics of art.

Beth is also an abstract expressionist artist- www.artbybws.com. Her paintings are informed by historical and contemporary stories of resistance. Often, Beth's art reflects the stories explored in the subjects she teaches. As such, her work has been featured in academic journals, on book covers, and at conferences worldwide. 

She lives in the unceded traditional territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations with her three children and a little dog named Bear. When not teachng, editing, or parenting, she can usually be found painting or cycling.
