Kwantlen’s four campus libraries at Cloverdale, Langley, Surrey and Richmond provide resources and services to meet the needs of Kwantlen’s diverse learner community. The library’s print and electronic resources as well as instructional programs and other services help students develop their research skills and succeed in their course studies. Library resources are available to students and all Kwantlen employees. Community borrowers are also able to access many of the library’s resources.
Smart Card
The Kwantlen Smart Card serves as both a library card and student identification card. When new students register for classes, they can obtain their Smart Card at any campus library.
The Smart Card must be presented when signing out any library materials and at all Student Association sponsored activities. In addition, it may be used as photo identification when picking up grade statements, transcripts, or other documents from Enrolment and Registrar Services. The Smart Card is permanent and is automatically updated each semester upon registration. The information on the Smart Card forms part of your student record and is covered by policy C.4. If the card is lost, please notify the library immediately.
Librarians are available at all campus library Information Desks to assist students individually and to teach the skills needed to use library resources effectively. Additionally, instructors may book group Library and Web Instruction Sessions for their classes. The library’s website provides information on library resources and services. In addition, it provides access to tutorials, the library catalogue and research databases. Multipurpose learning labs are available at all campus libraries. Lab computers are used for library instruction and searching library resources, as well as Internet access, e-mail and word processing.
Our collection includes more than 170,000 catalogued items of both print and non-print materials and over 900 print journal titles. All resources are listed in the library catalogue, which can be searched through the library website. In addition, the library subscribes to over 70 online research databases which provide access to full text articles from over 20,000 journals as well as additional resources such as online encyclopedias and dictionaries. Research databases can be searched through the library website. Kwantlen students and employees can access most of these databases from off campus. Community borrowers must access these databases inside the library.
The library has an excellent video and DVD collection. Additional videos and DVDs may be obtained from other institutions through the Library’s membership in the Materials Exchange Cooperative. Students can reserve videos and DVDs online through the library catalogue. Equipment can be booked by contacting the Audiovisual Services Technician at your nearest campus library.
The library houses additional collections that supplement the book, periodical and media collections. The government document, microform, and map collections provide unique and often difficult to obtain information.
The library also houses the Kwantlen Archives, which contains printed materials pertaining to the history and development of Kwantlen.
Most books are loaned for a three-week period with the exception of reference books, which must remain in the library. Journals may be borrowed for three days. Materials may be renewed if not requested by another borrower. Some materials are also placed on short-term reserve for students’ convenience.
The library operates a request and recall system that gives users access to materials on all campuses. Library users may request materials through the online library catalogue. Recall and other library account notices are delivered by email.
Fines are charged for all overdue materials. Failure to pay overdue fines or fees for lost materials may result in the withholding of student transcripts and credentials, the suspension of library privileges, and may also prevent registration for courses.
A Kwantlen Smart Card can be used to obtain community borrower privileges at the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, and many other BC post-secondary institutions. The interlibrary loan service provides access to the collections of many post-secondary libraries Canada-wide.
