Computer Aided Design & Drafting (CADD) Technologies

DESCRIPTION

Citation in Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD)
The Citation incorporates the Drafting/CADD common core which prepares students for the first Specialty semester.

Certificate in Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD)
The certificate prepares students for an entry level position as a drafting technician in the chosen Specialty. Using the most advanced CADD (Computer Aided Design & Drafting) software and 3 dimensional (3D) software, students will learn to produce drawings from concept sketches, design information, codes and specifications as per industry standards for production by builders and manufacturers.

Advanced Certificate in Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD)
The Advanced Certificate enables students to acquire advanced technical and writing skills in their chosen Specialty and further their career. These courses are offered in the evening to facilitate certificate graduates who are working in their industry.

Diploma in Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD)
The Diploma enables students to acquire math and physics skills and to apply advanced technical skills in a Specialty project that will incorporate design. These courses are offered in the evening to facilitate certificate and advanced certificate graduates who are working in their industry.

Specialties (see below for Start Dates and Enrolment Access)

  • Architectural
Prepare sets of drawings to graphically convey design and dimensional information to meet the qualifications for a building permit in residential, commercial and institutional applications.
  • Civil
Prepare sets of drawings to graphically convey design and dimensional information for road and highway construction, subdivision development, mapping and geographic information systems (GIS).
  • Electrical
Prepare sets of drawings to graphically convey design, dimensional and symbolic information for wiring and grounding, lighting, cable trays, control panels, and programmable logic controllers (PLC)
  • Industrial
Prepare sets of drawings to graphically convey design, dimensional and symbolic information for process piping flow diagrams, piping layouts, and fabrication drawings and for materials handling conveyors and transfer tables.
  • Manufacturing
Prepare sets of drawings to graphically convey design and dimensional information for component assembly, integrated machine design, tool and die, and computer numeric control (CNC)
  • Structural

After successful completion of the Core, students will be given priority to enter into the Specialty of their choice based on GPA and availability

PROGRAM FLOW

CADD Program Flow

Note: For 3rd & 4th Semester (Specialty 3 & Specialty 4) Courses will be run in the evening to facilitate students who have secured employment after the Certificate.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Drafting graduates may pursue a career in a variety of employment situations in architectural, engineering, manufacturing or municipal offices, or in a production /construction setting.

After a few years in drafting many of our graduates move on to positions in sales, customer service, production management, estimating, CAD and network management and contract services (self-employment). Responsibilities can include design team management, project management of small projects, and production scheduling.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

In addition to general Kwantlen requirements, the following admission prerequisites also apply:

  • Kwantlen ELST 0381 with a grade of C+ or higher; or
  • Appropriate placement by an ACP assessment

Students with mental or physical impairments, who may require program accommodations, should contact the Program Coordinator at 604.598.6123 to discuss required skills and competencies and a Disability Advisor at 604.599.3233 to ensure appropriate accommodations can be arranged.

Direct Entry

Applicants may have direct entry into the program if they have met the above prerequisites in secondary school or through secondary or post-secondary courses and programs offered by Kwantlen or adult educational facilities.

Upgrading for Entrance Requirements

If all of the entrance requirements have not been completed, the student must arrange (through Admissions) to take appropriate placement testing to assess his or her Math and English skills. Upgrading can then be arranged if necessary.

Additional Requirements

Applicants should have the ability to work well with co-workers as a member of a drafting/design team, which includes the ability to communicate in both written and oral English. The ability to pay attention to detail and the ability to visualize in two- and three-dimensions is an asset.

Note: Program applicants benefit from having basic computer knowledge such as E-mail, Internet, file management, working knowledge of Windows environment, basic operating system functions and text editing.

Applicants can arrange to acquire these basic computer skills ahead of time through Academic Career Preparation upgrading.
