Health Unit Coordinator

HEALTH UNIT COORDINATOR CERTIFICATE

DESCRIPTION

The Health Unit Coordinator (formerly Nursing Unit Coordinator) Program provides students with opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills, and values required to work as support staff in a hospital setting or extended care units.

Students will study medical terminology; communication strategies, policies and procedures related to working as a unit coordinator, confidentiality; pharmacology fundamentals, generic and brand name drugs and their uses; treatment and medication orders, equipment and medical devices for specific procedures; CPR; admitting, transferring, and discharging patients; lab orders; diagnostic orders; medical, surgical, and maternity orders.

The Health Unit Coordinator Practicum is offered in cooperation with hospitals in the Lower Mainland. A variety of practicum settings will be used to give students diverse hospital experiences.

Students must achieve and maintain a B- grade or higher to continue in this program.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

The focus of the program is to prepare graduates to work as a member of the health team in a variety of health care settings, including acute, long term and extended care.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the Kwantlen University College general admission requirements including the English Proficiency requirement for undergraduate studies, applicants must have completed:

  • Typing speed 40 wpm (50 wpm upon completion)
  • Scheduled Health Unit Coordinator Information Session
  • Criminal Record search

Note: Computer skills are highly recommended for students applying for this program.

CONTENT

Semester 1

Designed to give students a theoretical background to the subject matter and its application.

Semester 2

The course work will blend theoretical and practical subject materials. Practical experience in a nursing unit will be incorporated in the program.

Semester 3

The final practicum involves a 168 hour practicum in an assigned hospital working with a unit coordinator and taking on some of the responsibilities of the job.

Total Program Hours – 678 (38 weeks full-time)

FEES

Student loans available for this full-time program. Students are also responsible for costs related to travel to practicum, uniforms, and textbooks.

This program is offered on the Langley Campus on a full-time (day) or full-time (evening) basis.

GRADUATION

Upon successful completion of this program, students are awarded a Certificate in Health Unit Coordinator.
