Career Opportunities
Graduates of Kwantlen's Metal Fabrication Program are well prepared to meet the demands of industry. They will be prepared to enter an apprenticeship or work as a junior Metal Fabricator in areas of structural steel, heavy equipment, machinery manufacturing, mining, petro-chemical, transportation and marine industries. The job trend is very positive for the foreseeable future. This is particularly true for individuals who have good skill diversification such as fabrication, welding and mechanical skills, with a good foundation in academic study.

Apprenticeship
The Metal Fabrication apprenticeship requires apprentices to complete four levels of technical training each 5 weeks in length and 6400 hours of work-based training. For additional information on apprenticeship training refer to the Apprenticeship Technical Training section in this calendar.

Foundation
The Metal Fabrication Foundation program in British Columbia is 23 weeks. Metal Fabrication is the interpretation of technical drawings and layout of metal components, cutting, burning, sawing, shear, punching, drilling, and shaping of those components, through to assembly and welding or fastening to create the finished product. Students will develop the necessary habits concerning safety and the proper use of time, machinery, materials, and the work skills required to be a competent trade's person in today's workforce. Students who complete the Foundation program are eligible for credit for the first level of apprenticeship technical training, as well as 450 work-based hours credit toward completion of the Metal Fabrication apprenticeship program.
Student Profile
The program attracts both high school and mature students. PLA or transfer credit can be given to the students with previous post-secondary training.
Entrance Requirements
Students must meet either the regular student admission category or the mature student admission category in addition to the following:
- Adequate reading comprehension and math skills as assessed by Kwantlen (Physics 11, Math 11 and 12 would be an asset but not a requirement). Students must be able to perform a variety of cognitive, emotional and physical tasks safely within the program. Applicants who lack these levels of skills may upgrade their skills through Kwantlen's Academic and Career Preparation department

Students will require appropriate personal safety equipment, including high-top steel-toed safety boots, safety glasses, safety gloves, welding gloves, respirator (silicone half-mask type with cartridges for organic vapours and particulate filters) and cotton coveralls. Students are also required to have hand tools and a tool box for shop use. They will be provided with instruction on hand tool requirements and a list of tools required for practical work.
Text Books
Students are required to purchase their own text book for each level of the program. They will be instructed on which text books are required on the first day of each program. Text books can be purchased at the Kwantlen Book Store.
Graduation
Upon successful completion of this program, students will receive a Citation in Metal Fabrication and a Metal Fabricator's Logbook.
