Diploma in Music

Entrance Requirements

All applicants must meet Kwantlen’s general admission requirements. In addition, students seeking entrance to the Diploma program must complete an audition/interview and a placement examination in music theory. The program requires a minimum RCMT Grade 2 Rudiments or equivalent. Auditions are held in April and May; late auditions may be held in August, subject to seat availability. For piano, the minimum entrance standard is Grade 10 RCMT or equivalent. The minimum entrance standard for all other instruments and voice is Grade 6 RCMT or equivalent. Any student currently enrolled in the Certificate in Music program who wishes to enter the Diploma program must re-apply and successfully complete an audition. Audition and/or interview will determine ensemble placement.

Content

The Diplomas in Music are two-year, four-semester programs totaling 60–74 credits. Each concentration is designed to help students develop their abilities in both academic and applied studies. All students receive four semesters of private instruction on their chosen instrument and participate in a large ensemble each semester. The core curriculum is augmented by electives chosen by the student in consultation with a faculty advisor.

Diploma Concentrations

There are three concentrations within the Diplomas program: Diploma in Music – General Studies; Diploma in Music – Comprehensive Studies; Diploma in Music – Performance. Most students register in Diploma in Music – General Studies; they may change their concentration later.

English Requirement

Post-secondary English is required for completion of the Diploma in Music – Performance and Diploma in Music – Comprehensive Studies, and highly recommended for completion of the Diploma in Music – General Studies.

Transfer

Any student planning to transfer to another university, conservatory or other post-secondary institution should be aware that the transfer of credits from Kwantlen is at the discretion of the receiving institution. Students should consult with the appropriate university, conservatory or other post-secondary institution regarding transferability of courses. Students should be aware that some universities do not grant transfer credit for courses that have been challenged at other institutions or granted credit through Prior Learning Assessment.
