Long time fashion student and business entrepreneur graduates from Kwantlen

Mon, Jul 23, 2012
  • After eight years, Sarah MacLachlan, a fashion student and co-owner of the eco-chic fashion company Chloë Angus Design, graduated from Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s fashion design program this year. The time may seem inordinate, but between studying and having an entrepreneurial mind that leads you to start your own business, it’s only natural for time to become a rarity.

In the same year Sarah started at Kwantlen as a full time student, she and her now-business partner Chloë Angus started the Chloë Angus Design company - a choice that quickly turned out to be much more than a full time job. After her first year at Kwantlen she decided to take a year off from studying to concentrate on her growing business; little did she know she would be back before she knew it.

“Kwantlen’s fashion department later approached me and asked me to consider the prior learning assessment (PLA) program, and since it offered me the flexibility I needed, I was then able to resume my studies,” says MacLachlan. “I enjoyed the support and understanding of the teachers at Kwantlen and without their help I don’t think it would have been possible for me to continue my schooling while running a business.”

“Sarah represents all that Kwantlen can offer and like most of our grads, is already a loyal alumna from the fashion program,” says S Lee, instructor, Kwantlen Polytechnic University. “It is seeing the happiness and achievement of people like Sarah that has made my career so rewarding.”

Kwantlen’s bachelor of design, fashion and technology program, the only program of its kind in Western Canada, prepares students for careers in the global apparel economy in fashion design, production, marketing, and computer technology. This dynamic program features comprehensive industry-based education and training using leading-edge technology and extensive internships that result in employment. Through a prior learning assessment (PLA) Kwantlen will grant credit towards a certificate, diploma, or degree for previous learning if it fulfills the requirements of the programs to which the student has applied. Please visit: kwantlen.ca/transfercredit/pla.
