KPU Eagles golf team have successful home tournament

Metro Vancouver.....The KPU Eagles golf team had a successful start to the PACWEST CCAA season while hosting PACWEST Tournament 1 September 6-7, 2014 on home course Northview Golf & Country Club in Surrey, BC. The Eagles placed fifth out of the six teams from competing BC colleges and universities and next set their sites to the Island September 13-14 for PACWEST Tournament 2 hosted by the VIU Mariners.

Coming off of Saturday's fourth place finish, the Eagles were penalized two strokes for a minor infraction on Day 1 which set them back to fifth. A strong day on the course gave fifth-year Eagle Thomas Rose, Surrey, BC, a 71 to 75 from the day before. Rose finished the tournament in the lead for KPU with a combined total of 146, to tie for ninth place with Thomas Spencer, Slave Lake, AB from VIU, and James Casorso, Kelowna, BC and Will Deck, Kelowna, BC, both from UBC-O.

Second-year Eagle, Matthew Cooper, Mission, BC, shot 71 and 77, while fellow second-year teammate Tyler Roope, Langley, BC, shot 77 and 71. Both Cooper and Roope would end the weekend with a combined total of 148 to share 14th place nods with UFV's Taylor Callens, Surrey, BC.

KPU's first-year Jordan Morford, Abbotsford, BC, shot 78 and 81 to finish his first university tournament with 159 and 29th place overall. Third-year Eagle Mark Gamache, Surrey, BC, rounded out the team scores with 81 and 79 for 160 and 30th place.

The KPU Eagles team combined score was 301 after Day 1 and 298 after Day 2 for a combined team score of 599 and fifth place. The defending PACWEST and CCAA National Champion UFV Cascades would sweep first-place in team placements and individual honors, for both genders.

For the individuals category, KPU's third-year Aaron Ferrer, Delta, BC, shot 73 and 83 for a combined total of 156. First-year Eagle Sukhbir Jawandha, Surrey, BC shot 87 and 75 to end his PACWEST debut at 162.

The KPU Eagles Department of Athletics & Recreation enters its 14th season of interuniversity competition. The Eagles are members of the PACWEST conference and play in the Canadian College Athletic Association (CCAA) with 100 student-athletes participating on eight varsity teams in men’s and women’s basketball, soccer, badminton and golf. KPU athletics plays its home games at the Eagles’ Nest (Surrey Campus), Northview Golf & Country Club, Newton Athletic Park, all located in Surrey, BC and the Ace Badminton Centre in Richmond, BC.  The Eagles are active in the conference with staff members on various advisory committees and competing to host both provincial and national championships. The student-athletes are mainly from the lower mainland but KPU’s rosters have included student-athletes from North America, South America, Asia and Europe.
