Metro Vancouver.....The KPU Eagles are proud to announce their Sheraton Vancouver Guildford 'Athletes of the Week' for the week ending Sunday, November 2, 2014 as Ameila Worrell, Liberia, Costa Rica, of women’s basketball and Matt (Madison) Cooley, Delta, BC of men's basketball.

Worrell had a strong game on opening day of the 2014/15 PACWEST CCAA regular season. The first-year point guard was dominant force for the Eagles and led team in scoring in the first half. Worrell ended the night with 11 points, two rebounds, and 3/5 free throws.

“Amelia was very productive and brought a ton of defensive energy,” noted Eagles head coach Dan Nayebzadeh, “She found a way to make a positive impact on both ends of the floor while taking good care of the ball.”

Cooley, Delta, BC had a tremendous first-ever university game as he achieved a double-double with 20 points, 13 total rebounds, and three blocked shots. The first-year science student had a 70% shooting average, was successful in 11 of 16 attempted shots, and led his team in scoring for the night.

“Matt was a game-changer in terms of being very versatile on both sides of the court,” said Head Coach Vladimir Nikić, “He was aggressive on the boards, brought presence in the paint, has the ability to shoot the ball, and played the entire second half with four fouls to show great control, skill, and mental toughness.”

The KPU Eagles Department of Athletics & Recreation enters its 14th season of interuniversity competition. The Eagles are members of the PACWEST conference and play in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with 100 student-athletes participating on eight varsity teams in men’s and women’s basketball, soccer, badminton and golf. KPU athletics plays its home games at the Eagles’ Nest (Surrey Campus), Northview Golf & Country Club, Newton Athletic Park, all located in Surrey, BC and the Ace Badminton Centre in Richmond, BC.  The Eagles are active in the conference with staff members on various advisory committees and competing to host both provincial and national championships. The student-athletes are mainly from the lower mainland but KPU’s rosters have included student-athletes from North America, South America, Asia and Europe.
