Important: This 4-hour class includes time for viewing films. From the dawn of moving pictures through to the present world of blockbuster franchise movies, this course focuses students on the history and development of world cinema and examines film as a visual language and art-making practice. Students will learn methods for exploring aesthetic and technical functions of film along with considering the social, political, and technological contexts of moving pictures.

Important: How did art move away from tradition to the modern mash-up culture we see around us today? This course offers a survey of changing ideas in the visual arts of Europe and North America during the first half of the twentieth century with special emphasis given to the movements of the historical avant-garde. Traditional media such as painting, drawing and sculpture will be examined alongside the newer media of photography, assemblage, film and collage.

Important: It is said that a photograph is worth a thousand words, and in today's visually intensive cultures, we produce more of them than ever before. But what are the debates and histories that inform this medium, and how have artists and other practitioners shaped photography's place in our world? In this seminar, students will study the history and evolving debates and theories concerning photography and photographic practices from the mid-19th century to the present, looking at the complexities of “photographic seeing” and “photographic reading” as key components in the understanding of photography’s broad cross-disciplinary appeal and historical importance.
