Electronics Engineering Technology

Offered at Newton Campus
Start date: last week of August
Full-time
Description
The Electronics Engineering Technology diploma program is an internationally recognized two-year program whose graduates are working as hardware and software technologists and professional engineers all over the world. This program responds to market need for technologists trained both in the fundamentals of electronics and in the latest technological developments.
It prepares students to work both independently and as team members on the design, development, manufacture and supervision of software and hardware electronics systems. Graduates may go directly into industry as certified technologists or use our University Transfer options to complete an engineering degree in 2-3 years at a selected Canadian university. Students complete theoretical and hands-on laboratory training in technologies including fibre optics, circuits, satellite, radio and cellular phone systems. They do computer programming using CADD, C++, symbolic software, current PLCs, microprocessors and micro-controllers.
Electronics Engineering Technologists may develop and test power equipment systems; telecommunication, broadcast, recording and audiovisual systems; microelectronic circuits and systems; computer systems and networks; and software. They may supervise the building and testing of prototypes, or supervise and conduct the installation and operation of electrical and electronic equipment and systems. They may calibrate operating systems and components, or write specifications, schedules and reports in addition to controlling schedules and budgets. They may carry out research under the direction of scientists or engineers, or set up and operate specialized test equipment to test, diagnose and analyze the performance of electronic and electrical components, systems and assemblies.
The first year of this program is common to the Automation Engineering Technology program.
The Kwantlen Technology curriculum is certified by industry and taught by instructors with post-graduate engineering degrees. This program is offered in small class settings.

Admission Requirements
  • C or better in English 12 or Technical and Professional Communications 12*
  • C+ or better in Principles of Mathematics 12 or Applications of Mathematics 12
  • C+ or better in Principles of Physics 11 or Applications of Physics 11
* Applicants whose English competency is less than what is required to enroll in the program's communication course will be offered suggested pathways to reach the required level.
Direct Entry
An applicant may have met the above prerequisites in secondary school or through post-secondary courses and programs offered by Kwantlen and other adult educational facilities.
Mature Student Entry
An applicant may have gained both academic and related technology skills in a less formalized way and would be considered for the program.
Individual Basis Entry
Applicants for admission are considered on an individual basis. An applicant's educational background and/or work experience may be accepted as part of the program's admission requirements. An interview or appropriate tests may be required to determine the applicant's placement level.
Kwantlen offers academic upgrading programs. Call Admissions for more information.

Career Opportunities
The electronics industry is one of the fastest growing areas of our national and international high technology economy. Accreditation of our Technology program by the Association of Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC (ASTTBC), gives our graduates recognition of their diplomas throughout North America and offers job opportunities in Canada and around the world. Kwantlen graduates work in all aspects of the industry: research, design, manufacture, testing, operation, installation, marketing and supervision of electronic hardware and software.
According to provincial and federal employment studies, the demand for Engineering Technologists exceeds the number of qualified graduates from college and institute engineering technology programs.
Salaries, on average, are higher than for other two-year technology programs, and in some cases can be quite lucrative (see Compensation Survey under publications).
The field of electronics engineering technology is in a continuous state of development, evolvement and change; ongoing education is essential in the form of short-term upgrading courses, symposiums or seminars. Some technologists, however, may wish to further their education towards an engineering, information technology or business degree, refer to the transfer section.
Student Profile
The program attracts high school graduates and mature student applicants with work experience and/or post-secondary schooling. Advanced standing is given to students who have achieved specific program learning outcomes through related work experience or through appropriate course completion. Applicants require an aptitude for the application of mathematics, and a keen eye for detail. They must be able to work well with others and to work independently and take initiative as required.
Transfer
1. Third year of Engineering at Lakehead University
2. Third year of Engineering at University of Victoria through a bridging program offered by Camosun College
3. Third year of a Bachelor of Technology in Electronics or in Management or at BCIT
5. Third year of a Bachelor of Technology at the Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland.
Accreditation
The Association of Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia (ASTTBC) has accredited this program as meeting the Canadian Technology Standards at the technology level. ASTTBC, the professional association for the province's technologists and technicians, is mandated with the role of certifying technologists and technicians, as well as accrediting technician and technology programs offered by the colleges and institutes. Program accreditation provides assurance of high educational standards through a review process that is nationally and increasingly internationally recognized. Program accreditation permits graduates to be certified as technologists in their profession, a credential sought by many employers, and allows instant recognition of qualification for positions across Canada, the United States, and elsewhere.
The program will seek National Accreditation in Fall 2003 through the Council of Technicians and Technologists (CCTT).
Graduation
Upon successful completion of this program, students are awarded a Diploma of Technology in Electronics Engineering.
