Description
The Horticulture Apprenticeship program links learning and employment by providing apprentices the opportunity to further their education, while at the same time maintaining full-time employment in the Horticulture Industry.
Apprentices sign a registered agreement with an employer in the horticulture field who is committed to practical on-the-job training. During the four years of apprenticeship, students attend four six-week long technical periods for theoretical and practical instruction at Kwantlen University College in Langley. Credit for previous work experience and/or vocational training may be negotiated when the apprenticeship agreement is and the student is registered.
The first two years of the program teach general horticulture knowledge and skills. The instruction in years three and four focuses on one of Landscape Horticulture or Production Horticulture. The curriculum used for technical training has been developed and approved by the horticulture industry. It provides relevant, up-to-date information, and is based on recent technological advances in the horticulture field.
Journeypersons in horticulture are in demand. Municipal parks departments, golf courses, nurseries, landscape contractors, cemeteries and greenhouse operations often list a journeyperson certification as a minimal requirement when hiring horticulturists.
Student Profile
Apprentices in the practical Horticulture Apprenticeship program come from a number of horticulture enterprises. For example, they may be working for greenhouse owners, tree removal and maintenance companies, nurseries, golf courses, municipal parks, school boards or landscape maintenance/installation companies.
Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)
Apprentices may be granted up to one year of the apprenticeship program based on their employment and educational background. The employer, the apprentice and the assigned Apprenticeship Counselor determine this jointly.
Admission Requirements
A minimum of Grade 10 completion is required. Grade 12 completion (or its equivalent) is preferred, including Grade 11 Mathematics, Grade 11 Science and Grade 11 English. Part-time chemistry, english, and mathematics courses are available at Kwantlen, for upgrading.
Horticulture apprentices must be employed in the Horticulture Industry.
Students are indentured through a signed and registered Apprenticeship Agreement between the Provincial Government, the apprentice and their horticulture industry employer.
Once assigned a seat, students must fill out and submit a Kwantlen University College Application for Admission or Readmission (if already a Kwantlen student) as soon as possible.
Note: Kwantlen does not currently accept applications to this program from students who have not been indentured. This process is under review by the provincial government.

This program is designed to produce journeypersons with good theoretical and practical training, and experience in the Horticulture Industry.
