Introduction to the Canadian Health Care System and Nursing in Canada - For RNs PNUR 1101* (online)

Course Description

Formerly known as the Nursing in Canada course; this fully on-line, tutor supported course reviews the trends in Canadian society that affect the nature of nursing practice today. You will gain an understanding of the structure of the health care system, the health care team, and the regulation of nursing in BC. You will examine the concepts of leadership, team work and explore ethical considerations within the role of the Canadian nurse. This course is self-paced and will take you about 50 hours to complete. A current (within 5 years) Canadian Nursing Fundamental Textbook is optional.

Please note:  Applicants intending to register for Consolidated Clinical (PNUR 1130) are required to show proof of English proficiency.  Please see the Consolidated Clinical website for full details.

Course Format

Course is hosted over one semester. Coursework is approximately fifty (50) hours not including exam time.  Self-paced course with learner commitment for weekly course time dependent upon individual learner needs. Note: Late registrants do not receive the full fourteen (14) weeks. Course extensions are not available.

Course Cost

$500.00 CAD, plus GST

Course Grade

Successful grade for this course is Mastery.

Learners who are not successful in PNUR 1101, Introduction to the Canadian Health Care System and Nursing in Canada may attempt the course for a second time. Learners requesting a second attempt are required to seek permission from the Director, in writing. Learners are advised to contact their Canadian Nursing Regulatory Body for advisement if they are not successful after a second attempt. No exceptions. Please note, there is no appeal mechanism within KPU for students receiving non-mastery.

Please use the link located on the Faculty of Health, Professional Studies homepage and register via "flexreg".  The course to search is PNUR 1101.  Each month a new registration window opens.  The dates noted on these registration windows pertain to the registration timeline and not the course timelines.  The course timeline can be found on our home page under the heading Schedules.

Registration Deadline

Registration closes 2 weeks prior to end of semester to ensure students have sufficient time to complete the course.

Ross-Kerr, J. Potter and Perry Canadian Fundamentals of Nursing.  Latest edition and/or a copy current in the last 5 years.  Available through the publisher at or through Kwantlen's bookstore.
