Description:

Each year, we hear that last year was ‘the worst year on record for wildfires’.  The limited snowpack and rainfall of 2023/2024 winter is raising concerns about 2024.  Last fall, Climate+ Challenge hosted a BookClub event on John Vaillant’s “Fire Weather: The Making of a Beast”.  The increasing severity of wildfires in BC, the efforts of BC Wildfire Services, and the growing interest in the long standing indigenous practices of wildfire management, demands a proactive response so Year 3 Product Design Students embarked on a Team Project titled ”Clean Air Shelters for BC Wildland Firefighters.” This project adopts an industry-standard framework for structure & outcome, and the engagement of Wildfire experts to add to the relevant knowledge base. It strives to address SDG’s 3, 11, and 13.

What you’ll see: the Design Process in action, from the framing of the problem, learning from Industry experts in wildfire management, smoke exposure and clean air filtration. See how Designers work through material exploration, form and construction prototyping and testing to development their concepts, leading to what you’ll see as full-scale working prototypes for Clean Air Shelters.”
