Academic and Career Preparation


Adult Basic Education

Offered at Langley, Newton, Richmond and Surrey Campus
Full or Part-time (Part-time evening programs may be
available)
Description
Adult Basic Education will be of interest to those students who wish to:
  • Upgrade specific skills and knowledge in English (reading, writing, spelling, etc.), math and science;
  • Obtain a BC Adult Graduation Diploma (the “Adult Dogwood”);
  • Prepare to write the General Education Development (GED) high school equivalency test, the Language Proficiency Index (LPI) test, and other specific program entry tests.
Some students may be eligible to take ABE courses as tuition free under the Adult Basic Education initiative. Students are required to self-identify to Admissions when they have not completed a high school diploma or equivalent in order to be assessed for tuition free status.
Admission Requirements
Normal University College admission requirements apply. In addition, for continuous intake courses, all applicants, except those referred by instructors, must take assessments in English and Math to ensure appropriate placement in the program. Assessments are booked through the Admissions Office.
Applicants for semester-based courses should refer to the introduction to ABE course descriptions in the course section for further information on admission requirements.
Content
Class Format
Fundamental-level courses are given in a continuous-intake, individually format. Courses at the Intermediate, Advanced and Provincial Levels are offered in both semester-based and individually-paced class format. Course offerings will vary from campus to campus.
Fundamental Level
Students will benefit from the fundamental level if they have difficulty with basic reading, writing, and math. Completion of this level prepares students for some trades programs and ABE courses at the Intermediate Level.
Intermediate Level
Completion of courses at this level prepares students for courses at the Advanced level, for direct entry into many trades and vocational programs, and for the GED.
Advanced Level
Completion of courses at the Advanced level prepares students for courses at the Provincial Level. Advanced-level courses may also be used as prerequisites for many other courses at Kwantlen. Completion of Advanced English will normally allow a student to succeed in the LPI test.
Provincial Level
Completion of courses at this level prepares students for direct entry into many Kwantlen programs and courses.
Graduation - Provincial Level
The Ministry of Advanced Education, Training and Technology and the Ministry of Education award the BC Adult Graduation Diploma, the “Adult Dogwood”, through Kwantlen University College.
Diploma requirements available through Kwantlen are:
  • English 12 (ABEE 0091 or PSPE 1091))
  • Math 11 (ACPM 0082 or ABEM 0082 or PSPM 1082)or MATH 1093)
  • Three electives at the provincial (Grade 12) level or higher
Note:
  • Any 1100 level Kwantlen course worth 3 credits or more may be used as an elective.
  • Prior Learning Assessment or Grade 12 courses taken at BC Secondary Schools may be used to meet any of the requirements for the “Adult Dogwood”.
Reading Lab
The reading skills laboratory offers individualized help to acquire reading, vocabulary, and spelling skills at all levels. It is available to all Kwantlen students and may be taken as preparation for, or at the same time as, other University College courses.
Directed Studies
Directed studies courses in Math and English are available for students with specific upgrading needs. Course content and requirements for completion are determined between the individual student and instructor.
Provincially Articulated Preparatory Courses
Sponsorship

Some sponsorships are available from Human Resources Development Canada. In addition, students may apply to the ABE Student Assistance Program (ABESAP) for funds to help cover some general expenses.
Post Secondary Program Readiness

Offered at: Langley, Newton, Richmond and Surrey Campus

Post Secondary Program Readiness (PSP) will be of interest to those students who wish to:
  • Prepare for entrance requirements into other University College programs;
  • Upgrade specific skills and knowledge in English (reading, writing, spelling, etc.), math and science;
  • Prepare to write, the Language Proficiency Index (LPI) test, and other specific program entry tests.
Admission Requirements
