Kwantlen international exchange student wins Japanese speech contest

(METRO VANCOUVER, B.C.) Kwantlen Polytechnic University associate of arts student Sunyang Kang received the first place prize at the ‘NIHONGO’ Japanese speech contest while studying Japanese as a second language in Japan on an international exchange program.

Through Kwantlen’s international exchange program, Kang, a Japanese language studies student and Surrey resident, has been studying Japanese at Nagoya Gakuin University in Japan. Kang credits Kwantlen’s supportive faculty for encouraging her to pursue this life-changing experience.

“I didn’t know about this exchange program before but Ms. Sumiko Nishizawa, my Japanese instructor, recommended it to me. I thank her for this great opportunity and Ms. Beatrice Pires for encouraging and helping me get involved in this program,” says Kang. “Studying in Japan totally changed my life.”

Kwantlen Polytechnic University offers opportunities for students to study in other countries as either short-term study abroad students or exchange students. Exchange programs provide invaluable international experiences that help graduates gain communication skills necessary to work in the global knowledge economy.
