Kwantlen’s Science Challenge stimulates high school students to pursue science in university

(METRO VANCOUVER, B.C.) Kwantlen Polytechnic University held its fourth annual Science Challenge at Richmond Campus where over 400 students from 60 teams representing high schools throughout the Metro Vancouver region participated in a day of intense, head-to-head competition testing science know-how and ingenuity.

“Once again, student teams did great work. We look forward to seeing them again next year,” said Don Mathewson, Kwantlen physics faculty and event organizer.

The competition consisted of educational and challenging laboratory activities in biology, chemistry, engineering design, mathematics and physics. Scores were based on successful solution of design problems, good experimental technique and measurement skills, correct application of science concepts, and correct use of data and calculations to draw conclusions. Points were also awarded for speed and accuracy. The 2009 senior division overall challenge winner was Semiahmoo Secondary (Surrey) and the junior division overall challenge winner was Enver Creek Secondary (Surrey).

The Kwantlen Science Challenge is intended to cultivate students’ interest in science through inspiring and challenging lab exercises. Through this science competition, high school students are able to interact with Kwantlen’s facilities, faculty and lab staff to gain first-hand experience of science studies at a university-level.

Kwantlen’s science programs provide students with an education beyond classroom learning, in a scholarly discipline that also prepares them for professional careers. For more information about Kwantlen's Faculty of Science, Mathematics and Applied Sciences, visit: kwantlen.ca/science
