Kwantlen presents “Dirt! The Movie”

(METRO VANCOUVER, B.C.) Given the amount of time we spend trying to stay clean, it’s understandable that we often underestimate the value of dirt, even here in the Fraser Valley.

On November 10, Kwantlen’s School of Horticulture and the Green Ideas Network are hosting a free screening of “Dirt! The Movie,” a documentary narrated by Jamie Lee Curtis, which explores the environmental, economic, social and political issues related to the use and preservation of soil.

“The Fraser Valley has some of the world’s best farmland, but it is facing many of the same threats addressed by this move: urbanization, industrialized farming and pollution,” says Gary Jones from Kwantlen’s Institute of Sustainable Horticulture. “This movie demonstrates how damaged soil can lead to droughts, floods and diminished food production. We’re seeing increased pressure on the remaining arable lands, which is turning into a major source of conflict in many parts of the world.”

The importance of this film, Jones notes, is that “It also shows great examples from around the world of how we can re-connect to the soil and repair the damage we’ve done.”

“Dirt! The Movie” is a presentation of “Green Wednesdays”, a free, community-oriented movie evening series at Kwantlen’s Langley Campus, Room 1325 on November 10 at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Register at 604.599.3311 or by email to gary.jones@kwantlen.ca.
