Kwantlen Instructor Receives Teaching Excellence Award

SURREY, BC – (April 12, 2011) – Kwantlen Polytechnic University instructor, Chamkaur Cheema, has been named a regional recipient for the 2011 ACBSP Teaching Excellence Award. The Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) recognizes individuals each year who exemplify teaching excellence in the classroom.

"It is truly an honour to be recognized by my colleagues and the ACBSP organization," comments Cheema. "The award really belongs to my students, who have always made teaching at Kwantlen the most amazing and rewarding career I have ever had."

The award is the result of selection by the International Council of Business Schools and Programs, which is a regional council of ACBSP. As a regional recipient, Cheema will now be a candidate for the 2011 ACBSP International Teaching Excellence Award, to be announced in June.

"Professor Cheema has proven himself an outstanding teacher, manager, coach and mentor of students," comments David W. Wiens, Kwantlen Polytechnic University's Associate Dean, School of Business. "He knows firsthand what is transpiring in the field and readily shares that knowledge with his students, his colleagues, and the administrative team in the School of Business."

Cheema will be honored, along with other regional recipients, at the 2011 ACBSP Annual Conference this June in Indianapolis, Indiana. Two International Teaching Excellence Award recipients will also be announced at a special Salute to Regions luncheon.

The Associate Degree Commission of ACBSP established the International Teaching Excellence Award in 1995 to recognize outstanding classroom teachers. In 2002, the Baccalaureate Degree Commission created a similar award to recognize excellence in teaching at the baccalaureate degree level. ACBSP is the only specialized accrediting body for business schools that presents an award recognizing excellence in teaching, open to application by the entire membership. ACBSP currently has more than 932 member campuses in 48 countries and nine regions.

Kwantlen Polytechnic University has been serving the Metro Vancouver region for 30 years, and has opened doors to success for more than 200,000 people. Four campuses—Richmond, Surrey, Cloverdale and Langley—offer a comprehensive range of sought-after programs including business, liberal arts and science, design, health, trades and technology, apprenticeships, horticulture, and academic and career advancement. Over 17,000 students annually have a choice from over 135 programs including bachelor's degrees, associate degrees, diplomas, certificates and citations.
