KPU named a top B.C. employer

Fri, Mar 10, 2017

Metro Vancouver, B.C. – Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) is a top employer in B.C.—again.

In an annual competition that is widely considered the “Oscars of Employment,” the university has been named a B.C. Top Employer for 2017 for the 10th year in a row.

“This is an amazing achievement, and it’s really due to the collaborative efforts of our employees that there are so many wonderful aspects to working at KPU,” said Abby Thorsell, KPU’s associate vice-president, human resources.

The B.C. Top Employers list recognizes employers that lead their industries in offering exceptional places to work. Candidates are evaluated by the editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers using the same criteria as the national competition.

Employers are evaluated based on physical workplace, work atmosphere, benefits, employee communications, training and skills development, and community involvement, among other criteria.

Access to campus amenities, online and in-house training and development, and a culture that encourages a healthy work-life balance were a few of the reasons highlighted by the judges as to what makes KPU a great place to work.

Highlights of working at KPU:

-Diversity is embraced and encouraged through initiatives such as the Aboriginal Gathering Place and Elder in Resident programs, the campus Multi-Faith Centre and the President’s Diversity and Equity Committee.

-Opportunities for student assistants and co-op students.

-On-site fitness facilities and classes

-Health and wellness education initiatives, including a focus on mental wellness

-Free lunchtime musical performances put on by professional musicians

-Regular educational workshops, presentations and panels given and/or organized by KPU subject-matter experts.

-Campus “coffee hours” to increase employee engagement

-Retirement seminars

-Flexible work options, including job sharing

-Deferred salary leave plan

“It’s not possible to list everything that makes KPU one of B.C.’s top employers, but it’s safe to say KPU is a special place where employees do important work,” said KPU president and vice-chancellor Dr. Alan Davis. “Our employees are extremely dedicated, and we are always striving to ensure their experience working here is a positive one.”
