This course examines literature and digital media through the genre of fantasy, which predates recorded writing and extends into contemporar y video games. What is the value of fantasy, and how does it impact our literary lives? We will track this question across a variety of genres, including fictio n, critical writing, poetry, and digital media. We will consider the popularity of fantasy as a genre, as well as its relationship with colonialism, indigenous studies, sexuality, gender equality, and eco-criticism. Since fantasy is a shape-shifter, our discussion will range across many types of literature, including m edieval romance, gothic horror, steampunk, video games, and picture books.

American Dreams and Nightmares - In this course, we will examine the dreams and nightmares that have animated American culture from its begi nnings to the era of Donald Trump. Our focus will be on short fiction, plays, and poetry. But we will also examine classic American songs and movies from ar tists such as Bob Dylan and Martin Scorsese. Particular attention will be paid to the complex interplay between African-American and white culture. Authors to be discussed include, among others, Arthur Miller, Ralph Ellison, and Sylvia Plath.
