Through a study of Canadian drama from the 1960s to the present, we will interrogate public and private histories, and how these have been reconstructed for the stage. Focusing our analysis on the plays as works of literature and theatre, we will consider a range of styles, historical topics, and themes. Some of the playwrights may include Michel Tremblay, George Ryga, 25th Street Theatre, Tomson Highway, Annabel Soutar, and Jovanni Sy.

Matthew Arnold described the Victorian age as "deeply unpoetical" while Arthur Hugh Clough confessed that the public's fondness for novels such as Vanity Fair and Bleak House had made them "prudent and prosaic." In this course, we will consider accuracy of (and the apparent motivations behind) the frequent marginalisation of poetry and poetics during this seemingly prose-dominated era.
