How did art move away from tradition to the modern mash-up culture we see around us today? This course offers a survey of changing ideas in the visual arts of Europe and North America during the first half of the twentieth century with special emphasis given to the movements of the historical avant- garde. Traditional media such as painting, drawing and sculpture will be examined alongside the newer media of photography, assemblage, film and collage.

Fashio n designers like visual artists are curious about shape, line, colour, and form, and they all construct imagined worlds through creative expression to share wit h an audience. Spanning several eras and contexts, and covering a range of artists, designers, and mediums, this course will unpack how and why the systems that define the word of art and fashion overlap and at times conflict.
