From the Prehistoric period, to the world of the Ancient Greeks and Romans, and through to the Early Renaissance, this course will examine t he impact of cultural, religious, political, societal, and technological developments on visual art and culture of this era while exploring principal historical periods and moments of intersection with non-Western cultures.

From the High Renaissance to the French Revolution and the Age of Impressionism and the early avant-garde, this course provides a selective survey of European and North American visual art and culture objects, including works of painting, sculpture, printmaking, architecture, and other art forms fro m the Late Renaissance to the 20th Century.

From the dawn of moving pictures through to the present world of bl ockbuster franchise movies, this course focuses students on the history and development of world cinema and examines film as a visual language and art-making pr actice. Students will learn methods for exploring aesthetic and technical functions of film along with considering the social, political, and technological cont exts of moving pictures.

How do we navigate and make sense of the fast-changing world of new urban visual environments and the emerging world of screen culture? This course will explore case studies in street and graffiti art, hip-hop and punk culture, video gaming, anime, new media and Internet art, urban performance art, activist art, grassroots fashion, street photography, and the world of mobile photography and filmmaking.

How did art move away from tradition to the modern mash-up culture we see around us today? This course offers a survey of changing ideas in the visual arts of Europe and North America during the first half of the twentieth century with special emphasis given to the movements of the historical avant- garde. Traditional media such as painting, drawing and sculpture will be examined alongside the newer media of photography, assemblage, film and collage.

How do buildings reflect culture? What is the role of art and design in the creative expression of designed space? From the development and history of architecture in the Paleolithic Age through the Renaissance, this course introduces architecture as a unique medium with its own visual vocabulary an d codes. A close examination of select buildings and spatial environments will be explored set within specific cultural, social, political and economic contexts .

How does the world of art intersect with the world of fashion? Where are the real and imagined dividing lines, and why do they exist? Fashio n designers like visual artists are curious about shape, line, colour, and form, and they all construct imagined worlds through creative expression to share wit h an audience. Spanning several eras and contexts, and covering a range of artists, designers, and mediums, this course will unpack how and why the systems that define the word of art and fashion overlap and at times conflict.
