From the High Renaissance to the French Revolution and the Age of Impressionism and the early avant-garde, this course provides a selective survey of European and North American visual art and culture objects, including works of painting, sculpture, printmaking, architecture, and other art forms fro m the Late Renaissance to the 20th Century.

This 4-hour class includes time for viewing films. From the dawn of moving pictures through to the present world of blockbuster franchise mo vies, this course focuses students on the history and development of world cinema and examines film as a visual language and art-making practice. Students will learn methods for exploring aesthetic and technical functions of film along with considering the social, political, and technological contexts of moving picture s.

This course will investigate social, political, cultural and technological influences on Western art from the mid-twentieth century to the present , exploring modern and contemporary painting, sculpture, architecture, printmaking, ceramics, photography, film, installation art, video art, digital art, perfo rmance art and other multi-media practices.

Cities have always been cast in starring roles in the movies, and in this course students will study the dynamic intersection of the filmic medium and the emergence of the city on the screen, exploring through several city-themed movies (shot in Paris, London, Berlin, New York, Hong Kong, Mumbai, Ri o de Janeiro, Los Angeles, Vancouver and many others) how filmmakers and the techniques of filmmaking from the early twentieth century to the present have been closely bound up in representing the visual, spatial, and mental contours of many of the world's best known urban places.
