Studies in Fiction. Canadian Gothic from Coast to Coast: The Gothic's focus on liminal identity, monstrosity, alienation, haunting, imprison ment, and intergenerational trauma permeates Canadian fiction from different genres, including myth, realism, magic realism, postmodernism, postcolonialism, and horror. In this course we explore how the gothic and ecogothic—a focus on wilderness and a sense of ‘place’ that is arguably particular to Canadian Gothic—mani fests in and informs Canadian short fiction, novels, and graphic fiction across the nation from “super natural” British Columbia to the stark, realist gothic of Southern Ontario, to the rugged shores of Newfoundland.

Not Your Sidekick Anymore: Asian Representation Matters: This course will investigate the portrayal of Asian characters in films spanning th e silent era to 2018’s Crazy Rich Asians and why their representation matters. Is there a pattern with characters like Charlie Chan, Oddjob, Mr. Sulu, Long Duk Dong, and Rachel Chu? Analyzing racial stereotypes that have gone unchecked, students will discover how all-Asian casts, Asian leads, and pushback against white washing are paving the way to authentic representation on screen.
