Technical Apparel Summer Academy
Course Offering
Participants will gain hands-on experience in designing and constructing waterproof technical apparel, including material selection, industrial sewing techniques, and building a complete waterproof jacket using professional methods such as seam sealing and sew-free pocket installation.
Through industry tours, collaborative project work, and introductory fabric performance testing, participants will also develop practical skills in technical development, teamwork, and workflow management within a fast-paced studio environment.
What Students Need to Bring
• Notebook or sketchbook
• USB drive or cloud storage
• Closed-toe shoes and studio-appropriate clothing
• (Optional) Personal sewing kit (scissors, stitch ripper, pins/clips All programs are customized to meet your needs and can include hybrid learning (in person/online).

An Immersive Two-Week Journey into High-Performance Apparel Design
The Technical Apparel Summer Academy is a hands-on intensive program that introduces students to the dynamic world of technical apparel design. Over two immersive weeks, participants learn how high-performance outerwear is created—while building their own fully functional waterproof jacket from start to finish.
Working inside the industry-leading Wilson School of Design production labs, students gain experience with professional equipment, performance materials, and specialized construction techniques. The program includes expert demonstrations, guided equipment training, open studio lab time, and lectures on industry practices. Participants also visit several of Vancouver’s globally recognized technical apparel companies through curated factory and industry tours.
