Smashed Cucumber Salad


  • 2-3 cloves of minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon of chilli powder or 1-2 fresh chili (Optional)
  • 1/4 cup cilantro leaves
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • ½ teaspoon oyster sauce
  • 2 teaspoons Zhenjiang vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce
  • ½ teaspoon sesame oil


  1. Wash the cucumber under tap water.
  2. Use a rolling pin to SMASH the cucumber or place the side of the knife over the cucumber, then use your palm to smack the knife, until the cucumber starts to split.
  3. Cut the cucumber into short pieces and place them into a small bowl.
  4. Use a small amount of salt to marinate the cucumber for 15 mins. (Get rid of excess water inside the cucumber and make it taste better)
  5. Pour out extra water from the cucumber and start seasoning.
  6. Mixed all the ingredients above then cover the bowl with plastic wrap.
  7. Put the bowl into the refrigerator for about 15 mins to allow flavours to mingle.
  8. Dress it with cilantro leaves and you are ready to serve!
