| CRWR 2900 - Special Topics Fall 2026: Graphic Forms - Storytelling at the intersection of image and text. This hands-on class we will explore the relationship between image and text in composition: from conception, scriptwriting, and thumbnails to rough drawings, revision, inking and lettering. The course will also consider tools, techniques, publishing formats and platforms. Students will engage in drawing and writing exercises, collaboration, and the creation of image-and-text-based writing projects in different forms of visual storytelling. Advanced drawing skills are not required to do well in this class, emphasis will be placed on originality and creativity. Spring 2027: Genre Writing In this class we will look at the differences between literary fiction and genre fiction; cultural traditions that shape the categorization of both art and stories; the history, marketing, conventions, and expectations of various genres—as well as identifying which expectations need to be fulfilled, and which ones can be bent or broken. Students will create literary compositions that allow them to experiment in a range of various forms and genres, including but not limited to: mystery, science fiction, thriller, western, fantasy, horror, and romance. | CRWR 3400 - Advanced Special Topics Spring 2027: Translations and Adaptations - Students will experiment with acts of translation, transliteration and adaptation and consider how the transmission of ideas and meanings across languages and forms impacts a creative work. Through studying translations (including book-to-book, and poem-to-poem) and adaptations (including book-to-film, book-to-play, poem-to-song, book-to-graphic novel) and hearing from authors whose work has been translated or adapted, students will prepare to undertake their own project: translating their own creative writing from one language to another or from one form/medium to another. This course will foreground considerations of ethics, aesthetics and literary ownership alongside notions of community, co-authorship and cross-cultural exchange, as well as closely examine the nature of language and meaning—what is lost and what is gained through the adaptive process. Students with more than one language may choose to focus on translation, students who are monolingual may prefer to focus on adaptations. | ✓ | ✓ | |
