*Upcoming Special Topics Courses (Spring 2024):

ARTH 3100 Special Topics: Do you have to be 90 to get a retrospective - Women Artists in Canada and Beyond

Students will consider the barriers faced by artists, female artists, in pursuing a career as an artist. Students will review the historical context to identify the barriers faced by women and how they overcame some of them. Students will learn that while female artists were active, they did not always achieve the same visibility as their male colleagues, and they often disappear from public view after their death. Students will then focus on the situation faced by Canadian female artists, from the late 19th century moving into the 20th century, up until today. Students will also consider modern and contemporary artists who are not Canadian. Students will research how the situation has evolved and whether it has improved.

FINA 3202 Special Topics: Art and Climate Change

Students will be exposed to a variety of topics related to the climate crisis, and look at artists who are grappling with this theme in their work. Students will learn key concepts in relation to climate change, and consider questions such as why climate change is happening, what natural disasters and changes in weather patterns are happening because of it, what communities are affected, and how artists are responding to this reality through a variety of material practices. This course will consider how artists have shaped our understanding of “environment” over time, critically look at the problems that have emerged from this framing of nature as outside of us, and ask what role artists can take on in response to climate change. This course will invite guest speakers to give presentations and/or workshops, and may include field trips off campus.
