Truth Under Siege: Influencers, Outrage and Other Threats to Media and Society
We live in an era of constant connection and unprecedented access to information, yet shared truth is increasingly crowded out by clickbait, outrage and viral spectacle. When Neil Postman argued in 1985 that we might be amusing ourselves to death, he could not have fully anticipated how media and technology would evolve. This class gives students the opportunity to explore how these forces have transformed public life, often in ways that benefit platforms more than the public, and how influencers, digital algorithms, artificial intelligence and misinformation are reshaping truth and civic discourse.
