What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is often referred to as the “gentle art.” This grappling-based martial art focuses primarily on ground techniques and demonstrates how a smaller or weaker person can successfully defend against a larger, stronger opponent by using technique, timing, leverage, and positioning rather than relying on brute force.
For these reasons, BJJ is considered a practical and effective martial art for self-defense, while also promoting confidence, problem-solving, and physical fitness.
A Brief History
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu evolved from traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu. In 1914, Japanese Jiu-Jitsu expert Mitsuyo Maeda travelled to Brazil, where he met Carlos and Hélio Gracie.
The Gracie family became highly skilled in Jiu-Jitsu and eventually opened schools in Brazil. Through training and real-world competition, they adapted and refined techniques, focusing on what worked most effectively against different martial arts styles.
This continued testing and development helped shape the modern Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practiced around the world today.
What to Expect
Each class is led by a qualified instructor from VNDL Jiu-Jitsu, a local BJJ gym in Richmond. Classes are 50 minutes, beginner-friendly, and require no previous experience.
Classes focus on learning fundamental techniques, practicing specific movements, and building confidence in a fun, supportive, and safe environment.
Each class will include a warm-up, technique instruction and demonstrations, followed by drills to practice the techniques learned that day. Participants will work with partners to practice movements and techniques at their own pace.
Whether you are completely new to martial arts or simply looking to try something different, come ready to learn, move and have fun!
