Richmond graduate receives Governor General’s Collegiate Bronze Academic Medal from Kwantlen
(METRO VANCOUVER, B.C.) Shannon Reykdal, Community Support Worker Diploma graduate, received the Governor General’s Collegiate Bronze Academic Medal at Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s 2010 Convocation ceremony held at its Surrey Campus.
“For me, winning this award is recognition of the hard work that I put into getting where I am today. I feel honoured and grateful for what I have achieved,” said Reykdal.
Reykdal believes her decision to take the Community Support Worker program at Kwantlen was the right choice, both personally and professionally.
“Not only was the program close to home, it was the one that employers in the field recommended to me” Reykdal says. ”The skills I gained in the program allowed me to be immediately employable in the field of working with people with disabilities. I’m currently working as an educational assistant for the Richmond School District, and as residential support worker for Gateway Society that serves adults with autism.”
She also believes that the program gave her something more, “I really liked how the program made me more aware of my own personal morals and values; instilling them firmly in myself and my work. My diploma also gave me a stepping stone for continuing my education towards my ultimate career goals of becoming a child/family counselor or therapist.”
On behalf of the Governor General of Canada, this medal is awarded annually to a Kwantlen student who, in the opinion of the selection committee, has attained the highest academic standing in the graduation year of a two-year diploma program. It is one of the highest academic honours Kwantlen can bestow.
As a leader in innovative and interdisciplinary education, Kwantlen Polytechnic University offers all learners, regardless of background and preparation, opportunities to achieve the highest standards of academic performance. For more information, visit: kwantlen.ca
