Statement regarding convocation on June 22

Randall Heidt, vice president, external affairs, issued the following statement regarding convocation at Kwantlen Polytechnic University on Wednesday, June 22, 2022.

“KPU is investigating why its convocation event on Wednesday afternoon was oversubscribed after the first three events this summer proceeded without incident. The university is very sorry this happened and is working to minimize the chance of a repeat, although at this early stage (Wednesday evening) it cannot guarantee that another ceremony this week won’t be affected. Convocation ceremonies are planned months in advance, use facilities with set capacities and tickets have already been distributed so adjusting to an unexpected oversubscription at short notice is very difficult.

“With guests already on campus when the oversubscription came to light Wednesday afternoon, the university tried its best to accommodate additional guests in a place close to the convocation hall where they could watch the live stream and quickly connect with their graduate afterwards. We know this doesn’t match the experience of being in the same room as the graduate crossing the stage and we truly regret that, but logistical and room capacity limits prevent us from bringing everyone in and hosting convocation.

“Guests for future ceremonies are asked to bring their tickets and turn up early to maximize their chances of being accommodated in the graduation hall.”
