Field Crops and Fruit

The east field is home to many of our longer-season and perennial crops. Here, you’ll find everything from garlic and potatoes to perennial berry crops like gooseberries. The east field also hosts plots managed by the Institute for Sustainable Food Systems’ Farm School.

Long Season Crops and Cover Crops

Each year, the east field is planted with a mix of garlic, kale, potatoes, squash, cabbage, melons, cover crops, and more. The location of these crops shifts annually to help prevent pest populations from building up and to rotate through plants with different nutrient needs. This rotation also supports soil health by building organic matter.

Berry Crops

Several berry crops are already established at the KPU Farm, including strawberries, summer- and fall-bearing raspberries, currants, goji berries, haskaps, and gooseberries. These plants not only provide fresh, diverse produce for our community, but also enhance habitat and biodiversity across the farm.

In the coming years, more berry crops will be added in both production areas and hedgerows within the existing licensed area. With the planned expansion into the North Field, the food forest will feature additional berry species well-suited to acidic peat soils, such as blueberries, cranberries, cloudberries, and lingonberries.
