Job Description
Earthwise Society has been a not-for-profit leader in ecological land use and environmental education for over 30 years. The Society operates a small-scale organic teaching farm and public demonstration garden in Delta, BC. We have an exciting opportunity for an energetic and articulate individual who will play a key role in on site horticultural activities and assist with the delivery of food security and education programs. This is a full-time temporary position from May 1st through October 31st, 2026.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Greet site visitors, provide information, and increase community engagement at the Earthwise Demonstration Garden
- Oversee gardening activities to ensure the site is maintained as an attractive and inviting space for visitors, that plantings are healthy, free of weeds, and productive Implement a volunteer education and training program to enhance value and return for garden volunteers
- Maintain on-site composting systems as a component of organic soil management
- Monitor irrigation systems to ensure adequate irrigation for healthy plant growth
- Develop and assist with on-site marketing and sales initiatives including farm cart, plant sales, and CSA.
- Coordinate, engage, and train volunteers to participate in gardening and farming tasks Deliver hands-on environmental education programs at the garden for children and youth, including school groups
- Plan and deliver environmental educational workshops for adults on ecological landscapes, habitat conservation and other topics
- Plan and carry out outreach and engagement activities and events and build awareness in the local community
- Represent Earthwise at community events or farmer’s markets
- Assist with the delivery of other community gardening programs including therapeutic horticulture, garden tours and special events
- Assist with farming tasks as necessary including planting, maintenance, harvesting and post-harvest handling of crops
- Assist with the delivery of food security programs to provide fresh produce for those in need in our community
- Be responsible for tool and equipment use and maintenance, keep farm and storage areas organized and tidy
- Ensure that the overall site is well maintained and inviting to visitors
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in agriculture, horticulture, or environmental fields
- At least one year’s experience working on a small-scale farm required
- Knowledge of composting and organic practices; organic experience preferred
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills; experience with community outreach or environmental education an asset Be self-motivated, flexible, work well independently and in a team environment
- Be physically fit and enjoy working outside in all kinds of weather
- Proven ability in working effectively with volunteers and/or co-workers
The successful candidate will be required to provide a criminal record check.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
- This position will be located at 6400 3rd Avenue, Delta, BC, and at other sites in the community.
- This is a full-time temporary position, 35 hours per week from May 1st through November 15th, 2026.
- Weekend work will be required. Wage for the position is $21-24/hr based upon experience and education.
- There may be an option to extend this position based upon the availability of funding and a positive performance review.
