Position Overview

Reporting to the Course Superintendent, the Horticulturist is responsible for maintaining the aesthetic appeal and ecological balance of the golf course and clubhouse landscaping and surrounding property. This position combines expertise in horticulture, arboriculture, annuals, perennials, fertility, plant pathology, landscaping and environmental stewardship to ensure that the course and property remain visually beautiful while promoting sustainability and biodiversity. This part-time position offers approximately 16 hours of work per week from May through October depending on weather and the facility schedule. 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate various groundskeeping equipment and power tools including: string trimmers, backpack blowers, hedgers, hand tools, walk behind mowers etc. 

  • Care for all landscaping across the property including but not limited to the golf course, clubhouse surrounds, wedding area, parking lot etc. 

  • Oversee all fertility and soil maintenance needs 

  • Monitor the health of plants, identify diseases, pests and nutrient deficiencies, and implement an IPM Program to maintain plant health 

  • Design and implement new flower bed ideas and improve current ones 

  • Lead and supervise other grounds crew employees to complete projects as needed 

  • Develop seasonal planting schedule 

  • Communicate with the Clubhouse management team, as well as the Course Superintendent to prioritize and schedule necessary work 

  • Assist in planning and ordering plant material and tools 

  • Program and monitor garden irrigation while on site 

  • Complete hand watering as needed 

  • Maintain a clean working environment 

  • Assist in golf course duties as needed 

  • Other duties as assigned

  • Physically able to carry out the functions of the position 

  • Knowledge of golf and/or the ability to play the game is an asset 

Qualifications

  • Three or more years of experience in horticulture, landscaping, or nursery management 

  • Completion of post-secondary education in a related horticulture discipline 

  • Valid Basic First Aid, with CPR-C, and AED Certification, or equivalent will be required to be maintained during employment 

  • Valid BC driver’s license is required 

  • Willingness to complete a Police Information Check is required 

  • High level of knowledge of fertilizing needs, IPM procedures, and plant protection products is required 

  • High level of knowledge of west coast plant ID is required 

  • Valid Pesticide Applicators License is an asset 

  • Knowledge of irrigation system repair, scheduling and maintenance is an asset 

  • Understanding of the golf course environment and expectations is an asset 

Status: Part-time, hourly (2 days a week)

Reports to: Course Superintendent 

Location: The Redwoods Golf Course 

Hourly Rate: $28.75
