Beyond Borders: Lesley McCannell’s International Teaching Journey

Mobility for Internationalization Fund, Faculty Mobility

“Living and working in another culture is a unique form of development that can’t be replicated when faculty stay in their comfort zones.” – Lesley McCannell

Introduction

In 2024, Lesley McCannell, an instructor at KPU, took a transformative journey to Mexico—made possible through KPU International’s Mobility for Internationalization Fund (MIF). This KPU International’s initiative empowers faculty to lead globally-focused educational projects and deepen the internationalization of higher education.

With support from the MIF—offering up to CAD $5,000 in funding for eligible faculty—Lesley traveled to Monterrey and Mexico City, gaining firsthand experience of life, learning, and collaboration in a different cultural context.

A Cross-Cultural Learning Experience

Lesley’s travels took her to the University of Monterrey (UDEM) in Monterrey, where she immersed herself in a vibrant academic setting.

There, she:

  • Met with staff and faculty members across departments
  • Engaged in meaningful discussions about curriculum and collaboration
  • Gained a deeper understanding of cultural and linguistic dynamics—insights she now brings back to her students at KPU

This unique environment gave Lesley a new perspective on the challenges and transitions faced by international students in Canada, helping her build greater empathy and understanding in her own classroom.

Connecting Through COIL

A highlight of the trip was meeting her Collaborative Online Intercultural/International Learning (COIL) partner, Blanca Urdiales. Their in-person connection allowed them to fine-tune their plans for an upcoming collaborative semester, enhancing the learning experience for students across borders.

Lesley also collaborated with Ana Lilia Ramos Teran and other members of UDEM’s international team—planting the seeds for future initiatives and enriching the network of global educators tied to KPU.

Benefits to KPU Students

Lesley’s journey wasn’t just a personal milestone—it’s already creating ripple effects for students at home:

  • Strengthening and expanding COIL opportunities
  • Infusing curriculum with themes of emotional intelligence
  • Bridging theory and practice through real-world cultural insights

These enhancements help students engage with a more globally conscious and emotionally intelligent approach to learning.

Lesley's Reflections

Lesley expresses deep gratitude for the support received through KPU International Office. Her experience has already expanded KPU’s network of COIL partners and sparked new ideas for future curriculum development.

“I highly recommend this opportunity to my colleagues. Living and working in another culture is a unique form of development that can’t be replicated when faculty stay in their comfort zones.”
