KPU’s Faculty Yan Qu Takes Traditional Chinese Medicine Global

At KPU, faculty have access to unique opportunities such as the Mobility for Internationalization Fund (MIF). This fund empowers faculty to explore global experiences and bring fresh perspectives back to their students.
In 2024 Yan Qu, a faculty member in KPU’s Faculty of Health, who teaches in our Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) program received MIF funding to travel to Beijing, China to deepen her expertise in the origins of TCM.
Meet Yan Qu
Yan Qu is passionate about Traditional Chinese Medicine and the ways it connects history, culture, and modern healthcare. With support from the MIF, she visited Beijing to connect with students, professors, and professional practitioners of TCM right where the practice began.
What is the MIF?
The Mobility for Internationalization Fund (MIF) is offered by KPU International and provides up to $5,000 per academic year to help faculty engage in international learning and collaboration. Whether it’s partnership building, COIL project, field school, teaching, or cultural exchange, the MIF opens doors to meaningful global experiences.
Why Beijing?
Yan’s journey to China was more than a professional trip — it was a deep dive into the roots of TCM. While in Beijing, she
• Engaged with TCM professionals and scholars
• Observed how TCM is practiced and taught in China today
• Gained insights into the cultural value and healthcare role of TCM in its country of origin
Bringing it Back to KPU
This international experience didn't just benefit Yan — it made a direct impact on her students:
• She now shares firsthand knowledge of TCM’s global application in her classes
• Students gain from cultural insights and modern practices straight from China
• She’s enriching the curriculum and classroom experience
• This sets the stage for future exchange opportunities and even internships abroad
And since KPU is home to Canada’s only Bachelor of TCM program, this global connection makes an already unique program even stronger.
