Program Details

The Huayu Enrichment Scholarship aims to encourage international students (not including students from mainland China, Hong Kong, or Macao) to study Chinese (Huayu) in Taiwan. The scholarship is managed in accordance with the Ministry of Education Huayu Enrichment Scholarship (HES) International Student Directions alongside with Shih Chen University.

Destination

  • Shih Chien University, located in Taipei, Taiwan

Program Schedule

  • Long-Terms are available for eight to twelve months yearlong.
  • Mid-Terms are available for five to eight months yearlong.
  • Short-Terms are available for one to four months yearlong. 

Scholarship Value

The scholarship is in the form of a monthly stipend of NT$28,000 (approx. CAD$1,200). This stipend is intended to cover tuition, books, rent, and other living expenses.

  • Usually NTD$13,000 (CAD$550) is spent between tuition and accommodation.
  • The leftover NTD$15,000 (CAD$640) is used for life expenses (this amount will be given to you in cash every month)

Activities and Classes Offered

  • Mandarin Courses
    • Language Courses: 9:00am-12:00pm Monday to Friday (15 hours per week)
    • Cultural workshops such as visiting a local factory and making Pineapple cakes, learning how to play Majiang or arts, as well as Temple visiting.
  • "Hand-in-Hand" Internship
    • Assist a Taiwanese middle/elementary school students with English Language Learning
  • One-day Cultural Vist
    • Strawberry Picking at Dahu
    • Visit a Distillery at Yilan
  • English-Taught Program (Mid to Longterm only)
    • Audit classes offered by other department and programs (classes vary depending on the semester)
  • Language Exchange (Mid to Longterm only)
    • Request a timeslot after class with a Taiwanese volunteer to practice your mandarin and local student practices English with you.
  • Bilingual Assistant (Longterm only)
    • Become a teaching assistant or a teacher (program offered by the Taiwanese ministry of education)

Requirements

  • Be an active student at KPU
  • Have a GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Applicants must be of non-chinese background, as this program aims to teach mandarin to students that have never learned it
