Instructional Associate
I am an instructional associate, sessional instructor, and an artist who works primarily with paper. I hold a diploma in Fine Arts from Sheridan College, a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto and a Master of Fine Arts from Emily Carr University of Art + Design. I live, work, and make on the traditional and ancestral territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh, Tsawwassen, Kwantlen, Katzie, and Semiahmoo Nations, also known as Vancouver and Surrey. My work explores the experiences of people with cross-cultural identities. The core of my practice draws from my Polish-Canadian identity, specifically the material exploration of paper through printmaking, the Polish folk art called wycinanki, and installation. Nostalgia haunts my work which references my early childhood, a time when I felt the strongest connection to my Polish heritage and before I began to assimilate into Canadian culture. The tactility of printmaking and paper cutting’s repetitive actions allows me to remember the place of childhood thereby bridging the gap between my identities.

Instructional Associate
My name is Wei Chen, and I am a Chinese Canadian artist based in Surrey, BC. Initially trained as a photographer, I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts with distinction from KPU in 2023. With the greatest honour, I currently serve as the Instructional Associate for the Photography and Digital Media areas within KPU’s Fine Arts Department. Outside of my professional role, I continue to create and exhibit my art.
My practice primarily explores the critical and conceptual potential of photography, utilizing various modes of the medium to reflect on my ethnic identity and engage with contemporary societal issues. My artwork has been exhibited at local galleries, including the Newton Cultural Centre (2019), the Polygon Gallery (2022), and KPU’s Spruce Gallery (2024).
In my leisure time, I enjoy visiting art galleries, experimenting with Chinese hotpot recipes, and exploring the city with my wife and son.
