Concerned about the overrepresentation of Black and Indigenous persons in Canadian prisons, after graduating from KPU, I chose to pursue a career as a criminal defence lawyer, defending people against prosecution by the state.

After spending a few months backpacking around India in 2018, I moved to Edmonton and began my legal education at the University of Alberta.  After my first year, I transferred to the University of Victoria to complete my studies, and I graduated with a Juris Doctor (JD) degree in May 2021.

During my time at law school, I worked at a poverty law clinic in Victoria for a semester, placed third in Western Canada at a mock criminal trial competition, and spent summers working at both a full-service corporate law firm and at Student Legal Services of Edmonton.  I recently began articling at Donaldson Law, working with Ian Donaldson, Q.C., one of Vancouver’s foremost criminal defence lawyers. I plan to have my own criminal defence practice in Surrey after being admitted to the bar.

Currently, I am working as a Testing Administrator at KPU’s Assessment and Testing Services. Working in the ATS department involves being responsible for administering and coordinating all KPU assessments for prospective and current students.  We also have the responsibility of administering various computer-based high stakes exams for external clients.

Overall, working at KPU has enabled me to further enhance my knowledge and skills on a daily basis.  Working alongside a supportive team and helpful leadership makes coming to work enjoyable.  I have learned a tremendous amount by being given the opportunity to work in a diverse setting, dealing with a variety of students as well as external clients.  I enjoy being a part of KPU, where I can give back to the community.

I envision growing not only in my career in general but with this great organization in particular.  As I continue to learn and grow, I really want to be able to make a positive impact in whatever role I find myself in.

When not working, I enjoy spending time with family and making fun memories with my 7-year old daughter.

After graduating from Kwantlen, I was accepted into SFU’s Professional Development Program (PDP) for teachers.

I am currently working as a kindergarten teacher for the Burnaby School District.  I love bringing geography into the classroom and my students are always fascinated by the study of the Earth and how we can help the environment.  My Geography degree has given me a hands-on approach to teaching—you can often find my class outside, exploring nature or collecting rocks to examine!

I truly enjoyed my time at Kwantlen, and I am grateful for the knowledge that I can pass down to my students.
