*HIGHLIGHT* IDEA 1100 Description
What is IDEA? You may be already familiar with our program, but just in case not, our courses are non-lecture based, with no exams or mid-terms. The assignments offer you time, space, and prompts to dive into your passions, interests, and life outside the classroom. There are participatory activities where you are encouraged to get to know your fellow students, have fun, cultivate awarenesses, and express your curiosity and creativity in a supportive, enriching classroom environment.
Our courses have an emphasis on an ecological ethic, an ethic of interrelations, and a commitment to equity, compassion, access, community, dignity and decolonization, in and outside of the classroom.
In IDEA 1100, course explorations will involve active engagement in transcultural, creative and interdisciplinary inquiry. Themes will be explored by way of creative exercises, class dialogue, small and large group work, guest speakers and other experiential and student-centred aspects and assignments. You are encouraged to dream, and to connect deeply to yourself and to the hearts, realities, and spirits of others. Different and diverse ways of knowing and being will be honoured in relation to each learner in the course, and reflected in the kind of readings, activities and projects we undertake together as well as the guests that visit us.
Whether you are in the natural or social sciences or the arts, first year or fourth year, someone with a clear idea of what you wish to pursue or feeling unsure, this course seeks to provide a welcoming space for you to express and explore. An open learning environment in the classroom will be nurtured through a focus on creativity and experience, community and spirited conversation.
