Competency Assessment & Enhancement for Nursing Program (CAEN) PNCA 9000*

This course was formerly known as PNCA 1000 and has now changed to PNCA 9000

Course Description

The Competency Assessment & Enhancement for Nurses (CAEN) is available for both Registered Nurses (RNs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs).  The CAEN is designed for nurses who wish to update and/or enhance their nursing practice skills. The CAEN has 3 components; a self-assessment, an OSCE and multiple choice exam.   The OSCE portion is currently conducted online as well as the exam and self-assessment and may be scheduled the same day as the OSCE or an alternate day depending on availability.

The individualized assessment of nursing knowledge and skills is done in a simulated nursing lab designed for particular needs i.e. return to work would be based on the candidate caring for a patient on a medical/surgical unit in an acute setting. The multiple choice exam is at entry level practice with reasonable working level of knowledge.

Based on the assessment outcomes, areas for practice enhancement are identified and recommendations regarding educational support are provided.
