Description:
Join us during Thrive Month to welcome Nihkhah to KPU for an engaging and interactive workshop at KPU Surrey titled The Power of Indigenous Foods: A Community Learning Experience!
Open to students, faculty, and staff, this gathering invites the KPU community to explore the powerful connections between Indigenous food, culture, identity, and land.
We all share a deep connection to food. Food evokes memory, identity, and comfort, linking us to our families, cultures, and the land. For Indigenous Peoples, food is more than sustenance – it is a connection to their histories, knowledge systems, and communities. Yet, in most public spaces, Indigenous foods are absent, unacknowledged or inaccessible. Sharing traditional Indigenous foods fosters reflection, conversation, relationships, and increased understanding of culturally significant foods. It is an act of reciprocity and reconciliation, supporting Indigenous Peoples in reconnecting with the land while offering non-Indigenous participants a meaningful opportunity to engage and learn.
The workshop will begin with an Indigenous welcome from Elder Lekeyten, followed by opportunities to learn about culturally significant Indigenous foods and reflect on the relationship between food and identity. Refreshments will be provided by Chef Stephanie Baryluk, including Bannock and other Indigenous offerings.
