Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) is a process that allows students to receive academic credit for learning that has taken place outside of a traditional classroom setting. This could include knowledge and skills gained through work experience, volunteer activities, professional training, or other life experiences.

There are two main pathways for PLAR at KPU:

• Standard PLAR (or course-based PLAR): In this process, students may request credit for a specific KPU course by demonstrating that they have already achieved the learning outcomes for that course through prior learning. This process is coordinated through the Office of the Registrar. More information can be found here: kpu.ca/registrar/pla
• Rapid PLAR (or program-based PLAR): This option is designed for professionals who have broad experience that may align with the overall learning outcomes of an entire program, rather than individual courses. For example, if you have industry experience that is related to your program of study, you may be assessed for potential academic credits. This option is currently available at no cost to eligible students.
