Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) is a process that allows students to receive academic credit for learning that has taken place outside of a traditional classroom setting. This could include knowledge and skills gained through work experience, volunteer activities, professional training, or other life experiences.

There are two main pathways for PLAR at KPU:

  • Standard PLAR: In this process, students may request credit for a specific KPU course by demonstrating that they have already achieved the learning outcomes for that course through prior learning. This process is coordinated through the Office of the Registrar. More information can be found here: kpu.ca/registrar/pla
  • Rapid PLAR (KPU Flex): This option is designed for mid-career professionals who have broad experience that may align with the overall learning outcomes of an entire program, rather than individual courses. The KPU Flex team manages this.
