Kwantlen honours Environmental Protection Technology graduate with President’s Outstanding Graduate Award

Mon, Feb 16, 2009

Preet Bal, Environmental Protection Technology graduate, received the President’s Outstanding Graduate Award at Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s convocation ceremony.

Presented annually, this award encourages Kwantlen students to excel in their chosen fields of study and to participate in university, student and community activities to the benefit of others. Recipients have completed all their study in one program at Kwantlen; have consistently shown outstanding ability in the field; have contributed in a significant way to Kwantlen or community affairs; and may be recommended by faculty.

For Vancouver resident Bal, this award was the result of hard work and determination. Bal always aimed high in her quest for excellence throughout her university studies. Along the way, Bal achieved outstanding academic standings, impressed her co-op employer with her strong work ethic, participated actively in the community and has now earned the President’s Outstanding Graduate Award.

In addition to consistently earning top grades, Bal’s faculty thought her academic achievements were just a footnote of her accomplishments. Bal was the president of an environmental student club, a volunteer with a local organization promoting sustainable food systems, and a host of a TV show that discussed environmental issues on the community channel. In an environmental legislation class, Bal led a creative project for waste reduction during festivals in the City of Surrey, which impacted a bylaw and regulation in Surrey. It was the first environmental protection technology project to produce such immediate and tangible results.

“My educational foundation was built on a strong work ethic, top-of-the-class grades and a zest for learning,” said Bal. “I admit, I was blessed with a supportive family and brilliant faculty at Kwantlen who brought out my creativity, drive and excellence.”
