Kwantlen to co-host BCCAA Provincial Soccer Championships in Surrey

(METRO VANCOUVER, B.C.) With less than two days remaining until kick-off at noon on Friday, Kwantlen Polytechnic University is finalizing preparations for the 2010 British Columbia Colleges’ Athletic Association (BCCAA) Provincial Soccer Championships. Kwantlen is co-hosting the event with Langara College and Capilano University, which will see approximately 240 of the BCCAA’s top male and female soccer players compete over three days at Newton Athletic Park in Surrey, October 29-31, 2010.

The combined men's and women's BCCAA soccer championships feature 12 teams, representing the top six men’s and women’s teams from the conference. Led by three first team all-stars, Melina Gomez (North Vancouver), Brittany McNeill (Delta) and Shanay Sangha (Richmond), the reigning champion Kwantlen Eagles women’s team qualified for the tournament as the second-ranked team in Pool A and is looking forward to defending its provincial championship title.

“When the opportunity arose to host the tournament at Newton Athletic Park, playing on our brand new $2.85-million artificial turf field, we had to take it,“ says Elise Le Brun, director of athletics and recreation. “The level of soccer played in the BCCAA is of an extremely high calibre, and we look forward to showcasing the province’s top men’s and women’s soccer teams in the Surrey community.”

Kwantlen Polytechnic University added intercollegiate soccer teams to compete in the British Columbia Colleges’ Athletic Association in 2004. The men’s team won a BCCAA silver medal in 2006 and a bronze medal in 2007. More recently, the women’s team won the 2009 BCCAA Championship, and went on earn a bronze medal at the 2009 CCAA National Championships. They qualified for the 2010 BCCAA provincial championships as the second-ranked team in Pool A.

Kwantlen’s varsity athletics teams are the Kwantlen Eagles. In basketball, soccer, badminton and golf, they compete in national intercollegiate leagues. For more information about the Kwantlen Eagles or view live webcasts, visit kwantlen.ca/eagles or follow the Eagles on Twitter: KwantlenEagles
