Efforts to be flexible and engaging with its employees during the pandemic have seen Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) named as one of BC’s Top Employers for 2022.
BC's Top Employers is an annual competition organized by the editors of Canada's Top 100 Employers. This special designation recognizes the British Columbia employers that lead their industries in offering exceptional places to work. Employers are evaluated based on physical workplace, work atmosphere, benefits, employee communications, training and skills development, and community involvement, among other criteria.
This year, KPU was recognized for its flexible response to the pandemic. By offering the weekly virtual employee 'lounge' and a variety of clubs that hosted virtual events, employees stayed connected through a blend of on-campus and remote work. Through the Mobile Workforce Initiative, all of KPU’s employees transitioned to a laptop, giving them the ability to work in the location of their choice.
Assessors at Canada’s Top 100 Employers recognized KPU’s efforts to keep employees engaged – as well as its generous maternity and parental leave top-up, and defined benefit pension plan and retirement planning assistance – as one of the reasons why it was selected.
“This recognition highlights the innovation and resilience of our employees and students who have rallied to support the community during these unprecedented times” says Laurie Clancy, KPU vice president of human resources. “It is another milestone we have achieved together.”
KPU has also been recognized for its public commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion. In 2021, KPU painted the Progress Pride flag on crosswalks, pillars and stairs at all five campuses to create a safe, welcoming and supportive environment for 2SLGBTQ+ folx and people of all genders and sexualities. KPU also became a partner of Pride at Work Canada, giving employees access to all their webinars, E-learning courses, networking events, and articles free of cost.
In addition to the pandemic response and commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, other highlights of working at KPU include:
• Ongoing commitment to Indigenous reconciliation through the Gathering Place and Elder in Resident programs
• Health and wellness education initiatives, including a focus on mental wellness through yoga and meditation
• Regular educational online workshops, presentations and panels given or organized by KPU subject-matter experts
