Ctrl Alt Del

Ernesto Cabral and Freddy Nota

Alt in German refers to an “old” style of brewing but there’s nothing old about this beer! Altbier is a traditional German-style ale with characteristics of a lager and a somewhat rebellious history. Enjoy this well-balanced, bitter yet malty beer with a smooth, clean finish.

About the Students

For second-year Brewing diploma students Ernesto Cabral and Freddy Nota, Ctrl Alt Del was created as an invitation for the “undecided” beer lover/enthusiast…someone who’s used to drinking lagers but appreciates the full flavor of ales. Ctrl Alt Del offers the best of both worlds — the freshness of a lager and the subtle taste and aromas of an ale — along with the rich history of Altbiers.

Ernesto has a Chemical Engineering degree and was drawn to the complexity and science in the brewing process. He started homebrewing in 2015 and decided to pursue a formal education, looking for a program that included comprehensive sciences and practical hands-on labs. Ernesto applied to the KPU Brewing diploma due to the ‘first class’ faculty, laboratories and brew house equipment. He is currently working as a Research Assistant for the KPU Applied Genomics Centre (AGC) brewing with experimental hops and collecting data. Ernesto’s goal is to work at a brewery in the Fraser Valley when he graduates from KPU.

Freddy had spent 16 years working in the oil fields in South America when he decided to make a career change and pursue his love of beer, making the move from the ‘dog house’ (driller’s term) to the brewhouse. He chose KPU’s Brewing program because of its international recognition and the focus on the science behind making beer. Freddy is also currently working as a Research Assistant for the KPU Applied Genomics Centre (AGC) brewing trial beers with experimental hop varieties and hopes to open his own brewery someday.
